Choosing the Right Company Can Have a Great Impact
Electricity is something that many people take for granted. Without it, however, modern society would be placed at an almost complete standstill. With the increasing evidence of the damage that certain electricity companies are causing to the environment, it is important to be aware of the methods your electricity company uses to produce energy. Making the effort to browse Pennsylvania electricity companies for one that supports renewable energy and does not damage the environment may seem inconvenient, but it is well worth it to help protect the environment from further damage and to influence others to do the same.
Fossil Fuel Power Plants
The most common way electricity is produced is through the usage of a power plant, which is where fossil fuels such as natural gas, coal, and crude oil are burned. This method causes concerning levels of greenhouse gases to be emitted into the environment. The energy extracted while the fuel is burning is converted into mechanical work, which powers a steam turbine. A mechanical generator connected to the drive shaft of the turbine finally converts the mechanical work into electrical energy.
Nuclear Power Plants
Nuclear power accounts for 10% of the world’s power. Electricity from nuclear power plants is produced using a method nearly identical to the process that fossil fuel plants employ. However, the only thing that leaves the towers of a nuclear power plant is water vapor. As a result, nuclear power plants do not contribute to world pollution. Unfortunately, nuclear power plants aren’t without fault: in the case of a disaster, nuclear power plants can kill thousands. Although the vapor from the towers themselves contains no pollutants, the uranium used to produce the electricity is radioactive. Radiation from nuclear power plant explosions can cause severe health effects on humans such as cancer and physical deformities.
Hydro and Wind Power
Hydro and wind power are two other ways to supply energy. Hydro power is generated from falling or flowing water. The cost of this source is low and does not produce much carbon. Wind Energy through the construction of wind farms is a popular choice for electricity suppliers. Wind power is renewable, widely distributed, clean, produces no greenhouse emissions, and uses very little land.
Solar energy has been used by humans since ancient times. Solar energy is wonderful for the environment as it’s never ending, clean, and affordable. The trapped heat from the sun is used as a heat source for a typical power plant. With the use of solar panels on homes, many can eliminate the use of a commercial power source by using solar energy to power some of their appliances.
Your Actions Make a Difference
The process of eliminating damaging sources that are used to produce electricity cannot be completed overnight. That does not mean, however, that one should not make the effort to change it. Ensuring that you use an electric company that supports renewable energy and protects the environment from harmful emissions is a vital stepping stone for protecting the environment and influencing others to do the same.
